Alaska Chamber Orchestra – Eroica

The season opens with three masterworks and one unforgettable guest.
Mendelssohn wrote his overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream at seventeen — a
shimmering burst of fairy magic that still sounds impossibly fresh two centuries later.
Then Grammy-winning guitarist Jason Vieaux joins the orchestra for Rodrigo’s
Concierto de Aranjuez, the most beloved guitar concerto ever written. Its famous slow
movement — that aching English horn melody answered by the solo guitar — is one of
the great moments in all of music.

After intermission: Beethoven’s Third Symphony, the Eroica. Written in 1803, it broke
every rule about what a symphony could be — longer, louder, and more daring than
anything before it. Music history has a before and after, and this is the dividing line.
