Mahler: Resurrection

Experience one of the most overwhelming works ever written for the stage. Mahler’s Second Symphony asks a single question — is there anything after this? — and spends ninety minutes answering it. It opens with a funeral march and ends with a full orchestra, offstage brass, soprano and mezzo-soprano soloists, and a chorus that sits silent for over an hour before rising to sing “Rise again, yes, rise again, my dust, after brief rest.”

Mahler searched for years for the right words to end it. He found them at a funeral, hearing a choir sing Klopstock’s Auferstehung hymn, and later wrote that the whole finale came to him “like a bolt of lightning.”
Works on this scale don’t come to Fairbanks often. This one is worth the trip.
